30 Beauty Questions Tag

It’s been a while since I last did a tag but from what I remember, they’re fun and interactive! I saw Stella’s post and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to take part too. 🙂 I have told you a bit about myself in Q&As but I am sure that there are some beauty-related gaps that haven’t been filled. Well, you know what they say – if you don’t ask, you don’t tell! 😝

Let’s Start:

  1. Do you remember your first makeup item?

I’m certain that it was a mascara by Rimmel. I doubt that they sell it anymore since it was so long ago! At the time, my eldest brother’s girlfriend wore this mascara but I cannot remember if she gifted one to me or if I just went ahead and bought my own. I do remember however, that she bought other makeup for me. 🙂

  2. Describe your perfect mascara.

It has to hold the curl! Otherwise, it is a deal-breaker for me I’m afraid. I like a mascara that lifts my lashes and gives them some sort of existence since mine are so flat and straight. I like a mascara that’s plumping, not clumping! 😛 Oh, and waterproof/transfer-proof!

  3. What coverage do you prefer from foundation?

If you asked me a year ago, I would probably say light-medium but nowadays, I am into a solid medium coverage! As long as it is lightweight and looks natural, I’m good. 🙂 I am not a full coverage person – I still want to be able to have the natural skin peeking through.

  4. Favourite high-end brand?

Honestly, I think it is most likely between Bobbi Brown and Clinique for me although I don’t really know what is classed as high-end anymore? I just like the philosophy behind both brands for skincare and makeup. They are understated, non-fussy and classic.

  5. What cosmetics brands have you wanted to try but haven’t yet?

Natasha Denona? Her cheek duos in particular look enticing to me but I’ve always been curious about her eyeshadow formulas ever since Wayne Goss mentioned them.

Marc Jacobs is another because I’ve only heard good things and some of the formula swatches just look insane!

  6. Favourite drugstore brand?

It’s genuinely hard to say because I’ve only used a few things across each drugstore brand! The ones I like for foundations are not the ones I like for mascaras and so forth. If I had to choose though, I’d probably go with NYX.

  7. Do you wear fake eyelashes?

No, I have never worn any before! I’m not sure if I want to either, since my eyelids can be quite sensitive.

  8. What makeup can you not leave the house without?

I don’t wear makeup everyday but for sure, SPF is a must! So either a sunblock or a face base with SPF.

  9. What is your most cherished makeup item?

At this moment in time, I would say the Charlotte Tilbury Instant Look in a Palette (Beauty Glow). [See review here] It is the most I’ve ever spent on one beauty product but I love it a lot. I would actually be distraught if I ever dropped it and it cracked or something. I’ve been giving it a think and I’m going to attempt to always use this on top of my base!

  10. How often do you shop for makeup? Do you like to pick up an item here and there or lots at once?

Actually, not that often but when I do, I like to buy a few things at a time. I buy mostly skincare which I would say comprises 70% of my beauty spending. I am at a place where I am happy with my makeup collection and will limit spending even more on this area until a product is used up.

  11. Do you have a beauty budget or spend freely?

I never set myself a beauty budget because I know my spending habits are neutral as in I’d spend one month and then not spend for a few weeks until something has been used up. In a sense, the expenditure stretches over a few months. Of course, I do spend a bit more when I feel like it to treat myself, but it’s never that extravagant. I like to spend quite freely. 🙂

  12. Do you utilise coupons and rewards?

Yes, mainly with Boots and Superdrug. Although I don’t feel that they have been that rewarding. Maybe I don’t spend enough? 😂

  13. What type of product do you buy the most?

At one point, it was actually blush! I find blush versatile for me since it helps give me a lovely glow too. However, I have controlled my spending in this area because colour products are just impossible to finish.

For now, I would probably say mascara. I am always looking for a magic mascara that will help my short and straight lashes.

  14. Is there a brand that you absolutely cannot stand?

Not particularly? I have not had a bad experience with a brand for me to not use them at all. There are brands that I am not interested in buying, but I promise that the feelings are neutral.

  15. Do you avoid certain ingredients in cosmetics?

Yes and no. For instance, I think there is something in some eyeshadows that my eyelids are quite sensitive to but I don’t know what it is. It’s not a big deal though as I don’t use eyeshadow very often although I guess it would be useful to know what ingredient it is that causes my lids to sometimes dry out or go red.

I generally hate fragrance/perfume in my skincare. If it is last on the ingredients list, then it is okay but otherwise, I look out for that. I know there are people who avoid silicones, petroleum and mineral oil to name a few but I feel that the studies are not strong enough to convince me to avoid them!

  16. Do you have a favourite place to shop for makeup?

Probably Debenhams. I actually don’t buy drugstore makeup a lot because I cannot stand how grubby the testers get. I know that this is not the SA’s fault – it is just personal preference. At Debenhams, I like being left to it but still having a SA greet me per stand which is useful when I do want to ask something or otherwise.

  17. Do you like trying new skincare or stick to a routine?

Both? 😂 I am a bit of a skincare enthusiast, so I like to try new products after I am done with something. I have phases where I am tired of trying though so I just go back to an OG product such as the Simple Soothing Toner or the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel. This is mostly why I haven’t posted a skincare routine yet – it is always changing!

  18. Favourite bath and body brand?

I’m not sure I really have a favourite for the shower (I don’t take baths) but for body, I have been really into LUSH products lately.

  19. If you could only buy from one brand – what would it be?

Again, it is most likely between Bobbi Brown and Clinique. I will go with the latter because I have been using their skincare for years and a few of them are my holy grails. I also like their cheek pops. 🙂

  20. What brand do you think has the best packaging?

Charlotte Tilbury packaging is gorgeous, isn’t it? I didn’t think I’d love rose gold that much until I got my hands on her palette, and then a powder compact. I also really like Bobbi Brown packaging – just understated and classy!

  21. Which celebrity always has great makeup?

I don’t follow showbiz too much so this question actually took me longer than all of the others to answer.

I will say though, I have always been mesmerised by Fan Bing Bing’s beauty. (She is a famous Chinese actress and a bit of a fashion icon internationally!)

  22. Do you belong to any online makeup communities?

Does this count? Otherwise, not really.

  23. 5 favourite beauty gurus?

Wayne Goss, Lisa Eldridge, Bobbi Brown, Shaaanxo and A Model Recommends (Ruth Crilly).

  24. Do you like multi-functional products?

For the most part – no. The only ‘multi-functional’ product I really like are face bases that make for a great moisturiser, SPF and primer for makeup.

  25. Are you clumsy at putting on makeup?

I wouldn’t say so? I’m not always perfect with doing my eyebrows first go but I always clean up with a Q-tip so it’s not a big deal. I’m not great with eyeliner though, I’ll have to admit. But again, it’s okay because that’s not part of my everyday routine anymore! 😝

  26. Do you use primer for the eyes?

No. I currently don’t own any and never have. I don’t wear eyeshadow very often though which is why I haven’t gotten round to it.

  27. How many hair products do you use on a regular day?

Outside of shampoo, almost nothing. I should really ought to buy a heat-protectant spray since I always blow-dry my hair after a wash! 😳 I have started using coconut oil again though recently, to nourish my scalp. I do this 1x a week.

  28. Concealer or foundation first?

Foundation first! It is called so for a reason, no? I have a confession though… When I first started wearing makeup more regularly about 3 years ago, I was figuring out this question too. I might have even googled it or searched on YouTube. I think I did at one point, try concealer first but I found that it never looked right so I tried the other way round instead.

  29. Do you ever consider taking makeup classes?

No, never have. Makeup is still a very recent endeavour for me so every time I do wear makeup, it is like an adventure for me. I actually think taking classes would limit my creativity with makeup. Also – I’ve been told that I don’t have a face for heavy makeup looks and I agree. I am more suited to natural looks.

  30. What do you love about makeup?

Like fashion and skincare, it is very personal. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ but a real focus on who you are on the outside and how you want to feel on the inside. This type of catering…you have to try it to understand but it is truly amazing and representative.

With these subjects, especially regarding makeup, I think there can be a real common misunderstanding that you are a very vain person who doesn’t know any better than looking good. But what people don’t understand is that ‘looking good’ is a type of self-discovery, self-love and self-care. It shouldn’t be ignored…why shouldn’t you focus on yourself? Because society says so?

I hope you learnt more about me and if interested, please go ahead and participate in this tag. 🙂 Let me know and I’ll be sure to check back! As always, thank you for reading and being invested in me as a person.

    • Right? I think it doesn’t help either that so many brands and products launch daily so some of the older, classic brands do get left behind unfortunately!

    • It was definitely fun answering them! I think it’s amazing how although there are lots of products we probably all collectively own, we use them in entirely different routines with different looks and techniques to suit our needs.

  1. Isn’t it crazy that Bobbi Brown and Clinique aren’t considered high end anymore? I guess they’re mid to high. Nowadays, high end is like Dior and Chanel. Or maybe there’s a level higher than high end… luxury. Like Tom Ford and Serge Luten.

Marc Jacobs is a good brand based on the few items I tried. I really like their pencil liner!

High five on the sunscreen! Your future self will thank you! 😉

I love blush so much… I understand your attraction to them too! Right now I need to curb my nail polish acquisitions… 800 bottles is excessive.

I have had online arguments with people over foundation vs concealer first. It’s foundation first! And IF you need more coverage, then put concealer. Doesn’t that concept make sense?

This was an enjoyable read! ❤

    • Yes, haha I am slowly working my way through the ranks! 🤓 The funny thing is, once you shop a certain price range for a while, you don’t find it that expensive anymore so you start trading a bit higher. I have to admit, I do want to try Dior and Chanel foundations, but not quite interested in other things like their eyeshadow quads. I doubt I will ever get to the “luxury” rank though – I don’t know how I can ever justify it? (Although who knows?!)

There was a time when blush made me so happy every time I put it on. It’s such a good mood booster! Before highlight was even a thing, I think blush was my highlight too. 😬🙌🌟
